Created in 1882, originally as the Five Nations Tournament, since 2000, the Six Nations rugby championship has brought together six teams from the Northern Hemisphere countries of France, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England.
The annual tournament is held in February and March and sees teams take turns playing against each other, alternating between one home and one away game. Every second year, each team plays three matches at home and two away, before switching back the next year.
As an event, the Six Nations Championship is the most widely viewed sports competition in the world, drawing an average crowd of 70,000 spectators at each match (more than the NFL and the Football World Cup). Over a total of 15 matches, this adds up to almost one million spectators over the entire tournament.
The Six Nations Championship generates important revenues, recording over €120M in profit every year thanks to television rights (€70M). In France, the 2023 championship attracted over 6 million viewers for each French rugby union match and a record 3.8 million viewers on average for all competition matches on FranceTV.
The Six Nations Championship is the leading annual tournament in the Northern Hemisphere, taking place across Europe and offering a prestigious, moving showcase for France Sport Expertise’s businesses.
